St. Louis Area Girls Basketball ratings - Large and Small school top 20 12/26/2020
It has been a while since I came out with pre-season St. Louis Area girls basketball ratings for large and small schools. Part of that was going back and editing the girl's teams with the new MSHSAA districts and classes. I did not make the same mistake I made with the boy's spreadsheet, where I sorted the boys by the new classes/districts and all of my embedded formulae had to be revised.
I took a little time off for Christmas and now I have the unenviable task of digging through nearly 500+ Missouri girls teams to catch up on scores. The mathematical model is only as good as the number of games I rate for each team, so I have caught up a bit on the St. Louis area and am posting here.
I know that the Post Dispatch poll is based on 1000 students for a large school and less than 1000 for small but with the girl's private schools, I think that they must base it on MSHSAA class. That being assumed, Incarnate Word, the top team in the state, is in class six but listed as a small school (with 340 students) while St. Joes is a class six private school listed as a Large school (with 502 students). Go figure. I will post ratings that match up with their designations.
My ratings are based upon a "Sagarin" type mathematical comparison of head-to-head and opponent ratings but these ratings seem to match up fairly well with the Post Dispatch. There are a couple of exceptions including Eureka in #8 large schools and small schools #8 St. James, and #9 Cor Jesu.
Eureka started badly with a 33 point loss to Troy but they are 4-1 and playing very well right now. St. James might be considered outside the area, but if you throw Union in the mix, you might as well call St. James an area team. Cor Jesu is only 3-3 but they just upset St. Joes by one and played Webster Groves close, losing only by 10.
It is still early in the season so don't get too bent out of shape over team placements. The more games that are added to the model, the better the ratings will be. Until then, enjoy the live streamed games and yell at your TV set as much as you want. Just don't yell at me. LOL
I will include metro Illinois girls teams if and when they start playing.
