It should not be a surprise that the Lift for Life Academy girls’ basketball team won their first state championship this year. Then again, if you looked at their 3-7 record after ten games, you would probably discount them in the state playoffs. I think coach Greg Brown, who came from McCluer South-Berkeley, had some method to his madness when he set up the schedule. In the first ten games, Coach Brown had his team playing a bevy of potential state champion caliber teams, including (hold your breath) Union, St. Joseph’s Academy, Webster Groves, Parkway North, Francis Howell Central, Whitfield, Incarnate Word Academy and Vashon. Much like the high-octane schedule that Coach Dusty Dinkins put together for the class one boy’s champion South Iron Panthers, Coach Brown had his team playing the best teams on the east side of Missouri.
