PDCA and Class One through Three Sectional ratings March 1, 2021

Anybody know what PDCA stands for?  No?

I will tell you....  PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act.  It was coined by Dr. H. Walter Demings and used in his work to assist the Japanese in the 1950s to improve their electronics quality.  Some of you may remember the early transistor radios from Japan that lasted about two weeks before they broke?  Probably not, but now everyone gets their electronics from Asian manufacturers.  The Deming Wheel, or Deming Cycle, this integrated learning-improvement model was first introduced to Dr. Deming by his mentor, Walter Shewhart of the famous Bell Laboratories in New York.

What does this have to do with boys' and girls' basketball ratings?  Well, when starting a project, you PLAN out what you want to do, you DO it, you CHECK what you have done and then you ACT accordingly.  A simplistic version of this is "measure twice, cut once".

When I built the rating model, I had to plan out spreadsheets with 500 plus teams and put in formula names for each team.  I started the ratings and occasionally, checked to see if my ratings were solid or not.  If not, I double-checked scores, added more results, and posted new results.  If I got feedback on a team, I used that to act on new ratings.

The goal of a PDCA cycle is continuous improvement.  Every PDCA cycle should result in better results.

Well, lately, with so many game scores coming in, I have built some reporting tables and did the DO-DO cycle.  I did not check the table formula and am now finding mistakes.

Or, rather, readers are finding mistakes.  I received a message from a fan of Maryville girls who pointed out that Maryville was better than Chillicothe.  I knew that and if he read 810Varsity he would see that they are rated better.  But my district table was messed up.  Instead of a neat little formula for Maryville in their rating cell, I had a number.  A low number.  PDCA?  Not!!

So I apologize to all Maryville fans and here are the Class One through Three Girls and Boys ratings.  Hopefully, you won't find more mistakes.  LOL
