Missouri Girls Class One District seedings and Play-off predictions February 17th, 2021

I don't know the last time a boys and a girls Missouri basketball program both won a state championship but maybe someone can let me know.  In looking back at state championships, it looks like, if you can believe this, Scott County Central boys and girls won state titles in 1985, 1987, 1991, and 1993 in class 1A. And no other school has done this in Missouri basketball.  Amazing.

So who is favored this year?

In the class one girl's basketball seedings, 2020 second-place finisher Platte Valley/South Nodaway (Jefferson Conception Junction) probably is the favorite but the South Iron Panthers girls have an outside chance to win the state title and that might make history if the prohibitively great Panther boy's team also win their tournament.  It's an outside chance.  Platte Valley lost to Walnut Grove in the state championship 52-41 but I think the tables will be turned for Platte Valley/South Nodaway or whatever you want to call them (and maybe someone can explain the whole Platte Valley, South Nodaway, Jefferson, Conception Junction thing to me some time).

My final eight are....

Delta vs. South Iron  - Delta wins in OT

Community vs.Meadville - Community wins in OT

Walnut Grove vs. Leeton - Walnut Grove wins by 12

Platte Valley/South Nodaway vs. Mercer  - Platte Valley wins by 13

Championship - Platte Valley/South Nodaway over Delta by three.  

(Note: I orignally had Platte Valley over Walnut Grove by one but that will be a semi-final match-up because districts 1-4 play in the top bracket with districts 9-12).

 Class one clearly belongs to the vaunted South Iron squad.  The only thing keeping the Panthers from winning a state championship trophy this year would be the pandemic, which could, unfortunately, end the season at any time. Last year, Dora "upset" the Panthers in the sectional game.  I honestly believe that South Iron would beat Dora this year, except that Dora was moved to class two and Coach Luna and his four sons are now in Viola Arkansas and Isaac Haney transferred to Kickapoo.  South Iron's coach Dinkins has taken on an aggressive schedule with Vashon, CBC, Cardinal Ritter, Helias, and several other top-rated schools in class five and six.  Hats off to the Panthers for taking on the big dogs. In class two, Dora will be lucky to win ten games.  I don't know the specifics on Rick Luna's firing last spring but the school board's kids are getting a lot of playing time this season with the Luna family in Arkansas and Haney gone to Kickapoo.  Viola, under co

Back2back Final Missouri Boys Class Five Basketball Ratings - March 22, 2021

                                                                     Back2Back                                                 Photo by Paul Halfacre, Post Dispatch Respect.   That is the word I am thinking of right now.  Cardinal Ritter has been one of my favorite teams all year long, statistically because they played well against a tough schedule, but emotionally because I have watched a lot of these players compete in the Grassroots program against my grandson's Larry Hughes Basketball Academy.  You watch a group of talented athletes perform against your team and you respect that talent.  I really respect the talent on the Team Ramey teams and the guys that won their fourth state title in eleven years on Saturday.  Coach Ryan Johnson took the Ramey group to a new level this winter.
