Missouri Class Six Boys Basketball district seedings and State Play-off Predictions February 19th, 2021

I was holding off posting the Missouri Boys class six basketball seedings and predictions until MSHSAA had completed all the district seedings but I wanted to re-inforce the comments that esteemed Post Dispatch writer, David Kvidahl, made in a retweet of my www.810varsity.com top 20 ratings last night.

Kvidahl questioned why some of the top teams are all in the same district four with CBC, Chaminade, Webster Groves, Kirkwood and Ladue.  I have Chaminade and CBC rated #1 and #2 in the state.  Webster and Kirkwood are both top 20 teams.  The average team rating for district is 130 or about 15 or 20 points above many other districts.  It is just plain loaded and a Chaminade/CBC district championship game could just as well be a final four or state championship game.

It doesn't seem fair but you could point to district 16 with Park Hill and Staley, or district 12 with Kickapoo and Republic, too.  I realize MSHSAA sets up districts by locality to keep travel costs down, but why not spread out the KC teams, the St. Louis teams, and the Springfield teams so that a Kickapoo doesn't face an outstanding Nixa team in the first sectional game.  Both could also be final four teams if the sections were shuffled a little.

Coach Porter @coachporterCP3 suggested that Missouri adopt the Georgia playoff setup.  Seems like there are better ways of organizing basketball, football and other sports championships in our great state.

But, as someone recently quoted "It is what it is" so we live with what we currently have but does it have to be that way next year?  The best games may not be in the final eight.  The Chaminade/CBC district championship, the Pattonville/Fort Zumwalt North sectional, the Kickapoo/Nixa sectional and the Liberty/Staley sectional would all be great final eight games if the districts were seeded like a tournament.

Final Eight:

Chaminade over Jackson by 23 (the Chaminade-CBC district game will be monumental)

Kickapoo over Helias by 16 (the Kickapoo-Nixa sectional game will go OT)

Pattonville over Troy by 12 (the Pattonville-Fort Zumwalt North sectional will be a barnburner)

Liberty KC over Blue Springs by 5 (but the Liberty-Staley sectional will be another barnburner)

Championship Game:

Chaminade over Staley by 7 (I originally had Chaminade over Kickapoo by 6 but that will be a semi-final match-up because districts 1-4 play in the top bracket with districts 9-12).

 Class one clearly belongs to the vaunted South Iron squad.  The only thing keeping the Panthers from winning a state championship trophy this year would be the pandemic, which could, unfortunately, end the season at any time. Last year, Dora "upset" the Panthers in the sectional game.  I honestly believe that South Iron would beat Dora this year, except that Dora was moved to class two and Coach Luna and his four sons are now in Viola Arkansas and Isaac Haney transferred to Kickapoo.  South Iron's coach Dinkins has taken on an aggressive schedule with Vashon, CBC, Cardinal Ritter, Helias, and several other top-rated schools in class five and six.  Hats off to the Panthers for taking on the big dogs. In class two, Dora will be lucky to win ten games.  I don't know the specifics on Rick Luna's firing last spring but the school board's kids are getting a lot of playing time this season with the Luna family in Arkansas and Haney gone to Kickapoo.  Viola, ...

Predictions and more Predictions - March 13th, 2021

Corrected March 14th I had the Pembroke Hill -Richmond score reversed.  Thanks to the observant reader for pointing that out to me.  I think I took the score off a Tweet that had it reversed.  It was a good night for Gramps last night.  While I have talked about my prediction percentage going down as the tournament progresses, I was on a roll last night with 18 of 20 right, or 90%!  Both of my misses were in class five boys where Lutheran South continued their hot post-season playoff run and Bolivar "upset" Nevada.  I really did not expect Lutheran South to get by a very strong North County team, but the former LHBA super subs, Jonathan Prange and Jack Lawson, and Company built a strong third-quarter lead and held on against a hard-charging North County squad.
