Revised Large and Small St. Louis Area Girls Basketball ratings and School Size questions - January 28th, 2021
Yesterday, I took to Twitter about the issue of school size rankings with Gateway Sports Venue. I took umbrage to where schools were placed in the "Large" and "Small" school rankings by both GSV and the Post-Dispatch. I took another look at it last night and this morning and I moved some schools from Large to Small and vice versa. Here's why....
The Post-Dispatch defines Large schools as greater than 1000 students. Fine. I can live with that definition but I wish they would look at school enrollments when posting their Large School rankings. For instance, on the Boys side, De Smet has 746 or so students and is a large school. It is not the only misrepresentation. The P-D girl's rankings are even more puzzling.
On the Girl's side, I have listed my LARGE SCHOOLS with a definition of 750 or more students (that would put De Smet in the large boy's ratings). I have listed my top Large St. Louis Girls teams on the left and the Post-Dispatch Large School ratings from January 27th on the right, along with the student populations. You will note, that St. Joseph's Academy, Ursuline Academy, and Cor Jesu Academy are listed in the Large Girls ranking. I have moved them from Large to Small.
In the Small School rankings, Union High School is listed, although their student population is 1885 students. Therefore, I have moved Union to the Large Girls ratings.
Someone needs to be consistent. I will post Large and Small St. School basketball rankings going forward using the 750 student definition, so you will see slightly different schools in my ratings from GSV and the P-D going forward.
Here's the Large School comparison...
