Missouri Boys Class six basketball ratings week of January 3rd, 2021
Well, it is a new year and we should all hope and pray that 2021 will be a heck of a lot better than 2020 but that does not mean we can take our guard down. Grandma and I continue to hunker down with the iPad and live stream and score basketball games for the grandson's school teams. Their combined teams are something like 20-3 (varsity, JV and, freshman combined). Some of the live streamed games have been well done, professionally done with a scoreboard inset. Some live streamed games were so fuzzy, you could only tell there were players on the court, but not their numbers. Makes for an interesting scorebook.
The basketball ratings are keeping me very busy and the ratings are becoming better as more games are played. Early ratings are difficult with so few contests added to the rating model. Jeff Sagarin's USA Today basketball ratings use a Bayesian network to connect teams with only a few games in hand ( Jeff Sagarin - Wikipedia ). I don't get that sophisticated so the ratings are suspect for a while and I take my lumps with Twitter nay-sayers and ReTweeted nay-sayers. I need to develop a thicker skin but I guess the feedback helps identify games that I missed that would change the top teams. Often, though, it is the small schools in the middle of the pack where I take my "Licking". When you rate a team that Licking beat by 18, above them, you will be sure to hear about it from everyone in Licking, MO that has a Twitter account.
I was pleased to hear from Chad Rader, over at 810Varsity, in Kansas City. He and I worked out an agreement to publish Missouri Boys ratings for the top 20 teams in each class weekly. We will also publish Missouri Girls ratings on a bi-weekly basis. Chad really liked my quantitative ratings over the opinion polls that are subjective evaluations by coaches and sportswriters. I look forward to working with Chad on the ratings, which are statistically based on game results rather than opinions. As we all know the saying, everyone has an opinion, just like everyone has an...
So I will publish all of the teams in each class sometime after Chad posts on www.810Varsity.com. Check out all the great stuff Chad has going in KC. It's a great website for all things Kansas and Missouri basketball. And I am proud to now be a part of that excellent website.
I have been posting Missouri basketball ratings for the past three years. There isn't another poll that includes all teams in every one of the six classes. And none of the other polls your see are quantitative. So here are the class six ratings for this week. Chaminade leads the group with some excellent teams close behind. There may be a few surprises in the list but ratings are based on overall performance and not just one game's result.
Enjoy the ratings and if you have any comments, please give me specific game results that you think are pertinent. I can only make the ratings better with good feedback. The difference in rating is the predicted spread for two teams playing each other.
