Missouri Boys High School Basketball Ratings - All Classes 12/07/2020

On this 79th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, let us remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our great country.

I posted Pre-Season rankings for Boys and Girls Missouri High School teams in mid-November.  A bunch of Thanksgiving and early December tournaments have provided me with data to populate the statistics for a robust ranking.  Robust it is not.  I won't have a good handle on team ratings until the end of December when most teams should have five or six games under their belt.

I am still waiting for MSHSAA to post classifications and district assignments, so I will not post class rankings until that info is known.

The other day, I noticed that the esteemed Earl Austin, Jr. had apologized on Twitter for omitting a great performance by an up and coming sophomore, after an outstanding performance.  I didn't think he should need to apologize.  When you think about all the kids and games he is watching on the tube, there is only so much that a man can do.  Recognizing every kid that deserves a shout-out is an impossible task.  It reminds me of what Abraham Lincoln said about “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time” or something like that.  People make mistakes or don't quite recognize all of the great performances, like Earl.  Of course, if he recognized everyone, it would water down the accolade.  Such is life.

I made a mistake (which I corrected) in the pre-season ratings.  I somehow messed up Greenwood Springfield's rating.  I was pretty proud to see that the ratings for Kickapoo and other top teams were pretty solid.  I had Kickapoo by 27 over Bolivar and it ended up being 25.  A number of other games have been close to my ratings spread.  That is until the outstanding Greenwood team, led by Animu Mohammed, "upset" Poo by two in a down-to-the-wire thrilling win on Saturday.  It was then that I realized I had misplaced Greenwood.  I had them at a 97 rating when they were a 118 last year and would only be better this year.  I apologize for my error but then, maybe I shouldn't.  I am ranking over 1200 boys and girls teams in Missouri, and if I miss a few games or mess up a rating occasionally, I should cut myself some slack.

The current rating is still a mix of pre-season and calculated ratings.  Teams, like Vashon, have not hit the hardcourt officially.  So this is something to whet your appetite.  As we get more games in, the top teams will sort out.  In the meantime, enjoy the fact we are playing games in these trying times.

By the way, I want to give a shout-out to the Scoreboard Guy (@scoreboardguy), who provides a lot of game results that I could not find anywhere else.  And Scoreboard Guy has been doing this the past week with Covid.  Hats off to You!  Get better soon.
